Dr. Khirod Chandra Panda, Ph.D., Audiologist -cum -Speech Language Pathologist was born on 21st May 19 Seventy one in Berhampur which is a city on the eastern coastline of Ganjam district of the Indian state of Odisha and completed his schooling from Govt. Boys’ High School, unit-VIII, Bhubaneswar. He completed his higher secondary from Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar College, better known as BJB College, Bhubaneswar in the year 1986 and later joined bachelor’s course in Audiology and Speech Pathology at Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, now known as Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities situated in Bandra Reclamation, Mumbai. AYJNISHD is an apex institute functioning under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India for the overall rehabilitation of the hearing impaired and deaf population of the country. After completion of his bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech Pathology from the above institute he completed his Master’s in Speech and Hearing from All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Manasagangothri, Mysore now Mysuru in the year 1991. The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, commonly known as AIISH is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. The institute was established in the year 1966 with a focus on training professionals for speech and hearing sciences. He completed his Ph.D. from Utkal University, in the year 2003. Utkal University is the oldest university in Odisha and the 17th-oldest university in India located in Bhubaneswar.

He worked in Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, Mumbai for couple of years and later joined at Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela under Steel authority of India Ltd. He continued in Rourkela Steel Plant till 1994 and subsequently joined in Health and Family Welfare Deptt., Govt. of Odisha. He was deputed to National Hearing Centres , Melbourne, Australia in 2003 and worked there for 2 years before rejoining the Govt. of Odisha in 2005. He has nearly fitted 30000 digital hearing aids till date. Fitting of digital hearing aids is an art and science and one has to be extremely careful in fitting hearing aids in cases with operated ears and high frequency sensorineural hearing losses. One has to be thorough in venting in moulds, in the canal and in the ear hearing aids for a comfortable fitting lest it may give rise to occlusion effect. A good fitting of hearing aids would definitely and significantly improve one’s communication abilities. Hearing aids not fitted properly would lead to loss of c ommunication abilities, abnormal amplified background noise, social withdrawal, whistling sound, irritability, mental depression and loss of confidence in the individual.

Dr.Khirod Chandra Panda, Ph.D. was awarded with the National Award from Her Excellency President of India in 2009 for his outstanding contributions pertaining to “Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities”. Later in 2016 he was awarded with the State Award from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha relating to “Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities” for his exemplary services in the field.
